Streamlining My Home Older homes have an incredible amount of charm and nostalgia. While some of that charm stems from the old-world construction practices of ornate stonework and interesting woodworking, there are also negative aspects of living in a dated home, namely the electrical system. We bought our first older home a few years ago, and it has been interesting to see just how much of a problem the electrical system has been. We knew that we needed to update a large portion of the space, so we started going through and having sections replaced. This website is here to help other people to know when to work with electricians.

If your house has an old circuit breaker panel, you may wonder if it is still safe to use. If so, look for the following signs that it is time to replace your home's old circuit breaker box with a newer model.

1.  Lights Flicker When Large Appliances Are Turned On

One sign that there could be a problem with your breaker box is when you notice that the lights flicker whenever you try to use any large appliances, such as your oven or washing machine. If this happens, the issue could be caused by either one breaker in particular or the entire box.

If you find that the lights in only one room are affected, the problem could be the individual breaker that feeds that area. For example, when your refrigerator kicks on, the lights in the kitchen dim or flicker. This issue may be resolved by having an electrician change out that one circuit breaker.

However, if the lights in the bedroom flicker when you turn on the stove, and they are not on the same line, this is a sign that there could be a short inside the box itself. If this is happening, there is a chance that the short could fry the wires, or worse, cause an electrical fire. No matter which problem is causing the issue, you will need a professional to make the assessment.

2.  Odd Hissing Noises Are Heard

Another sign that your circuit breaker box should be replaced is when you start hearing odd hissing noises coming from the panel. While you may occasionally hear a low hum coming from the box, especially if you are using a lot of electricity in your home at once, you should never hear hissing or popping noises.

If you do hear these strange noises, there is a good chance that the electricity is arcing between the individual circuits. You will hear these sounds even if no electricity is being used. When this happens, there is an increased risk of a fire or even electrocution if you were to touch the panel at the wrong moment.

To determine whether the box is making these noises, turn off all electrical appliances and apparatuses in your home, and stand by the breaker box. If you hear hissing, popping, or any other loud noises, have the box inspected immediately.

If you notice any suspicious behavior, noises, or odors coming from your circuit breaker box, you need to have it checked out as soon as possible. Contact a residential electrician and schedule a time for them to inspect the box and discuss your options for replacing it with a new one if needed.
